Match Preview: Lacklustre Eagles Count on Bezecourt to Deliver

Geylang International who threw away their best chance to end their winless streak in their midweek draw against Young Lions, have to recover quickly from the setback when they host high-flying Tanjong Pagar United at Our Tampines Hub this Sunday (June 26).

The seventh-placed club in an eight-team league had not tasted victory for 11 games, four shy from their all-time record of 15 matches during the 2006 season.

While the Eagles' dismal run has to be shouldered by the team collectively, it is hard to ignore that the underwhelming form of Vincent Bezecourt is emblematic of the side's poor season.

Coincidentally, Bezecourt helped Geylang International to their sole win of the season against defending champions Lion City Sailors on the opening day, courtesy of a strike from outside the box.

Since then, the former New York Red Bulls midfielder could not replicate that fine start and could only chalk one more assist in his side's winless sequence.

Not for the want of trying, the statistics reveals that the Frenchman is the top dribbler in the league. He is also positioned fourth in the number of shots on goal (37), six ahead of Sailors marquee striker Kim Shin-wook.

However, it is a let down that the high volume of shots could not be converted to goals - his 11-game goal drought mirroring that of the Eagles' winless run.

For Geylang International to have an uptick in results, the midfielder with European tournament experience would have to be clinical in his finishing.

His goal contribution is even more essential against the red-hot Tanjong Pagar United who are currently on a three-game winning streak. The surprise package of the season have also earned two clean sheets during the sequence.

Facing an in-form, water-tight opponent, Bezecourt and his fellow attackers would have to work doubly hard to unlock the Jaguars' defence and secure that overdue victory.

As the saying goes, "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again".

Team news: Huzaifah Aziz serves his one-match suspension and is in contention for first-team selection. Geylang International head coach Noor Ali has to make a decision on whether to play Huzaifah at the expense of Joshua Pereira.

Fadli Kamis, stricken with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, remains the only absentee for the game.
